What is Juvedérm™?
As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form.  FDA approved Juvéderm™ injectable gel is a “next-generation” dermal filler. Juvéderm™ is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. The smooth consistency gel helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your "smile lines" or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).  It is also used to restore volume around your lower eyelids (nasojugular folds).  Dr. Stark also uses Juvéderm™ to perform lip augmentation.

Juvéderm™ injectable gel is available in two formulations—Juvéderm™ Ultra for versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds, and Juvéderm™ Ultra Plus, a robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles. This allows your healthcare professional to better tailor treatment to your unique needs.

How does Juvéderm™  work?
The hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in your skin plays an important role in moisturizing the skin and helps to give it elasticity and tone. It is the fundamental matter in which the collagen fibers and elastin are immersed. It is a reduction in the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin over time which contributes to skin aging.
 
Juvéderm™ is similar to the hyaluronic acid found in your skin. Injected into the dermis, it replenishes the natural hyaluronic acid and hydrates the dermis by absorbing and holding the water molecules and giving back to your skin its volume and initial form. In this way aging lines are quickly reduced and the lip border instantly lifted and increased, helping to preserve and restore a youthful looking skin.
 
What is a Juvéderm™ treatment like?
To ensure your comfort, Dr. Stark will apply a topical anesthesia to numb the treatment area first. The anesthetic cream takes about 20 minutes to take effect.  Dr. Stark will ease the Juvéderm™ injectable gel under your skin to augment, or fill, wrinkles and folds. The procedure is quick and easy and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

How will I feel following the treatment?
With Juvéderm™, there is minimal recovery or downtime. For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize the risks of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. After the treatment, some injection-related reactions may occur, including bruising, redness, firmness, swelling, and bumps; however these reactions are relatively uncommon. If you experience severe swelling or discharge, contact us immediately.

How long before I see results and how long will they last?
You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last up to 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
