What are BOTOX® injections for?
BOTOX® was first used by ophthalmologists to treat spasms of the lids and twitching of facial muscles back in the 1980's. It was then observed that in addition to relieving these serious medical conditions, BOTOX® smoothed dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. While you may have earned every one of your worry lines, you don't have to show them anymore.

Now, thanks to the FDA approved drug, BOTOX®, dynamic lines can be dramatically softened. The procedure known as cosmetic denervation uses BOTOX® injections to improve the appearance of forehead lines, frown lines, and crows feet.

How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. BOTOX® relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Are BOTOX® treatments safe?
BOTOX® injections have been used safely and effectively for over 20 years by ophthalmologists to treat many ophthalmologic disorders, including blepharospasm (spasms of the eyelid) and hemifacial spasm (contraction of facial muscles). Each year, millions of patients receive BOTOX® treatments for a variety of conditions, and it has quickly become the most popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging.

Is Dr. Stark experienced with BOTOX®?
Dr. Stark is one of the most experienced BOTOX® specialists in the Chester County area, and as an ophthalmologist, is uniquely qualified to perform BOTOX® because of his extensive training in eyelid anatomy and physiology.

What is the treatment like?
Dr. Stark will meet with you and perform a complimentary consultation prior to your BOTOX® treatment. At that time, he will determine if you are a candidate for BOTOX® injection.

Your BOTOX® treatment will be performed in an examination room environment. Dr. Stark will inject an extremely small dose of BOTOX® into each designated facial muscle using a microneedle. Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the discomfort associated with the injections is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthesia is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately. If you experience any discomfort after the procedure, you can use ice compresses or over-the-counter pain medication. Treatment results can usually be appreciated in seven to ten days.

Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects are light bruising or redness at the injection site. This is temporary and can be covered with make-up. Serious complications with BOTOX® injections are extremely rare, but like any medical procedure, it does have some risks. Choosing an ophthalmologist experienced in BOTOX® injections can significantly minimize the risks of droopy lids.

What results can I expect?
If dynamic wrinkles make you look older than you are, BOTOX® can smooth these out and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance. However, this procedure cannot improve deep wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. BOTOX® injections will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a facelift or brow lift.

What are the limitations of BOTOX® injections?
The effects of BOTOX® are temporary and last from three to six months. The early clinical studies indicate that the duration of treatment benefits is increased over time so that you may require injections less frequently in the future. Also, the duration of effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective for those over 65 years of age.

If wrinkles persist despite relaxation of facial muscles, cosmetic fillers, such as Juvederm®, may allow the individual to achieve the desired smoothing results.

How can I find out if I am a candidate for BOTOX®?
Since every individual is unique and has special needs, a personal consultation will be necessary. Women who are pregnant or nursing are not candidates for this procedure. Additionally, patients with certain neuromuscular diseases or patients taking certain medications may not be suitable candidates. Together, you and Dr. Stark will determine if BOTOX® is the right choice for you. Treatment can be done the same day following your consultation.
